Page Background

clinicians simply describe what the patient tells us about

their symptoms and what we find on urodynamic testing.

We are pleased that Fode and Sønksen accept our

inclusion criteria of a bladder contractility index of

<

100 in

men and a detrusor pressure at maximum flow of

<

20 cm

H

2

O in women as a proposed definition of urodynamic DU.

We add that men were also required to have a bladder

outlet obstruction index (BOOI) of

<

20 and women a

maximum flow rate of

<

15 ml/s. Without a definite DU

diagnosis for our inclusion criteria, we concluded that

progress in exploring the relationship between UAB and DU

would be impossible. Fode and Sønksen also point out that

we selected symptomatic DU patients. As patients were

selected from our urodynamic database, they were

generally symptomatic, as was essential for the work

described in our paper. To accomplish our programme of

work in a reasonable period of time, we took previously

investigated patients, which is why the analysis was

retrospective.
